Truthfully, we can't be for certain that your choices would have fully prevented what happened. There are a number of possibilities that could have changed the outcome. And it wasn't as if we had fully explored the mansion, either.

And that outcome could have potentially been worse or better. I can't say "we'll never know", as there are many things in this world that can see into those alternate timelines, but...
